djdsk, based on your responses I don't think you have very much experience of the country at all.
Depending on the circles in which you move, I can accept that you might not have encountered the social issues of guns and violence in Cambodia. You'd have to move in white-oriented circles, however ... ask any Cambodian what action to take in the event of a car accident and you'll pretty soon hear about the benefits of handguns. If you ever meet one, ask someone from rural Cambodia about the hazards of banditry from remnants of the Khmer Rouge, and about the free availability of weaponry (not just guns) arising from their bloody recent history.
My longest stay in Cambodia was for three months, around the time of the 2003 elections. Politically motivated attacks with guns, and yes, grenades, were a regular and frequent occurrence, reported widely in regional press at the time. In total I've probably spent six months in the country, the majority of it in and around Phnom Penh. I was in Phnom Penh at the time a grenade was rolled in the door of an ecstasy club during a little bout of friendly rivalry. I don't remember the name ... it was one of the Chinese owned hotels ... Manhattan, perhaps?? Anyway, I'm sure you aren't interested in the facts of the matter for me to go and dig up the reports which were published at the time.
Like I said, I can accept that you might not have seen the darker side of Cambodia if you visited as a tourist. But to call 'BS' on Cambodia's national style of dance just shows total ignorance on your part. It is a beguiling and attractive dance form with a long folk genesis, which adapts well to a steady pop beat. It is also practically impossible to avoid it in Cambodian (not Western) night life.
I'm calling BS on you, mate.
